Why We Think Maruti Should Offer the 1.2-litre Dual-Jet Engine in the Swift?
1. More Powerful Engine
The current Maruti Suzuki Swift is powered by a BS6-compliant 1.2-litre K12B VVT motor that churns out a maximum power output of 83bhp and 113Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an autobox. The New Dzire Facelift, on the other hand, gets a BS6-compliant 1.2-litre K12C Dual-jet motor that churns out a maximum output of 90PS of power along with 113Nm of torque on tap. It is also mated to both a 5-speed manual as well as an automatic gearbox (AGS or auto gear shift in Maruti' words). The Swift has been one of the most fun to drive cars in its segment and so with this new engine it will get an added amount of boost that will make it even more zippier to drive.
2. More Miles per gallon
Although the updated dual-jet motor of the Dzire is not paired with a mild-hybrid system, it offers a better fuel economy compared to its predecessor. While the earlier K12B motor was rated at 22kmpl from ARAI for both petrol manual and automatic options, the new K12C motor is rated at 23.26kmpl for the manual ones and a whooping 24.12kmpl for the automatic ones. So along with the more power, the new engine offers us slightly better fuel efficiency too, all thanks to the dual VVT (variable valve timing) technology. Thus the Swift with its light-weight compact dimensions and this stupendous engine can be a great mile-muncher and will definitely save you some amount of money you would have rather spent on the fuel.
3. Maruti's No Diesel Policy
The Indo-Japanese carmaker has ditched all the oil-burners from its entire portfolio and is betting on no diesel policy due to the stricter BS6 emission norms. There is a bridge between gasoline and oil-burners when we compare their fuel efficiency. So, Maruti should offer this fuel-efficient engine in the Swift hatchback to attract people who want a Maruti but cannot compromise on fuel economy. The Swift was earlier also powered by the 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel engine which is often regarded as the National Diesel Engine of India and it offered a whooping 28kmpl of mileage. The dual-jet motor cannot beat the benchmark of the oil-burner but can surely attract a lot of buyers. Moreover, this new petrol motor even gets an idle start/stop system which further aids in improving its fuel economy in bumper-to-bumper city traffics.
4. More Creature Comforts and Safety Features
It has been in news for a long time that the facelifted version of the Swift will be launched this year. The facelifted Swift should carry the new 1.2-litre K12C petrol motor under its hood which has its own set of advantages. But, to make the facelifted Swift a worthy upgrade Maruti should also offer some useful features in it like they did with the Dzire Facelift. The New Facelifted Swift should get some minor design tweaks along with the addition of new features like Cruise control, Suzuki's new Smartplay Infotainment system, etc. and also safety features like Electronic Stability Control (ESP) with hill-hold control in the AGS variants.
5. More for not much more
5. More for not much more
The recently launched Dzire Facelift gets a host of upgrades but is just marginally more expensive compared to its pre-facelift version. The 2020 Dzire Facelift retails between Rs. 5.89 lakhs - Rs. 8.80 lakhs, Ex-showroom, making it around 8000-21,000 rupees dearer than the previous model. The same amount of hike can be expected in the Swift hatchback too and thus it will get much more features than before without much increment in price. The current sticker price of Swift is between Rs. 5.19 lakhs - Rs. 8.02 lakhs, Ex-showroom.
Thus, in a nutshell, we can say that if Maruti offers the 1.2-litre Dual-jet engine in the Swift it will make it a better all-round package with more power, better fuel-efficiency and many more add-ons without burning a bigger hole in our pocket.
