2020 Mahindra Thar India Launch This Year; The Go-Anywhere SUV!
The Bombay-based home-grown manufacturer, Mahindra and Mahindra, has been testing the new generation model of its go-anywhere SUV Mahindra Thar in India since a real long time. The Indian car-maker has now officially announced that the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be launched in India in the first quarter of the financial year 2020-21.
The Mahindra Thar has been one of the most iconic off-roaders of the country. The current generation Thar is known for its offroading capabilities but it certainly does miss out on creature comfort features. Also, the quality of materials used on the inside isn’t too good and even the overall build quality doesn’t feel great. However, Mahindra seems to understand these shortcomings and will be addressing these in the next-generation Thar. The current-generation Thar even has certain ergonomic flaws that are expected to be rectified in the upcoming model.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar was expected to be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo but the company has ditched the plan and it will be showcased and launched at a later date in mid-2020. The new-generation Thar will get a host of upgrades compared to its predecessor. Aesthetically, it will get a typical boxy SUVish design with a seven-slat grille, LED DRLs, LED taillamps and maybe LED headlights too. It also gets sporty looking 5-spoke alloy wheels.
The interior of the new Thar will be completely refreshed and it will get a new dashboard layout with many creature comfort features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a multi-information display in the instrument cluster, manual AC, multiple USB ports, a rear parking camera, power-folding wing mirrors, and even a sunroof. The new Thar will also get two airbags and ABS as standard, along with a front-facing second row of seats.
Talking about the powertrain options, the new Thar will be powered by a BS6-compliant version of Mahindra’s tried-and-tested 2.2-litre diesel engine that will churn around 140bhp and will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra will also offer the new Thar with a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol unit that will deliver around 190bhp and 380Nm of torque. The company might also introduce an automatic gearbox with the Thar at a later stage.
